Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2017 identified two linear anomalies that correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps. A number of weaker, more fragmentary linear anomalies were also recorded, two of which coincide with previously mapped cropmarks (both part of a group of probable post-medieval field boundaries recorded as NHER 52080). Subsequent trial trenching at the northern end of the site had entirely negative results, despite three of the excavated trenches coinciding with previously mapped cropmarks (all part the group recorded as NHER 52080).

Map

February-March 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (GS20).
This site was one of 26 identified as a priority for examination due to their archaeological potential.
The survey of this field identified a number of linear anomalies, two of which clearly correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps. The first is a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned anomaly at the southern end of the site that corresponds with a boundary shown of the Dunton tithe map (S1). The second is a north-west to south-east aligned response that corresponds with a presumably later boundary that appear for the first time on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2). This boundary also coincides with a previously mapped linear cropmark (part of a group recorded as NHER 52080). Although a number of other short, fragmentary linear anomalies were also recorded these are regarded as being of uncertain origin and therefore not necessarily associated with sub-surface remains. A north-west to south-east aligned anomaly at TG 2200 0205 and a north-north-east to south-southwest aligned anomaly at TG 2187 0175 do though appear to correspond with previously recorded cropmarks (both also part of the group recorded of probable post-medieval field boundaries recorded as NHER 52080).
Various other linear anomalies are thought to be the result of recent agricultural activity. A number of amorphous areas of magnetic disturbance are of probable natural origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S3).

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P3TT36; Trenches 1311-1314).
Four trenches excavated in the northernmost part of the site revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits, despite three of them coinciding with previously mapped linear cropmarks (all part of a group recorded as NHER 52080).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
