Summary

A geophysical survey of this site undertaken in 2020 recorded a number of linear anomalies, at least two of which correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-centurty maps. The nature of the other anomalies is far from certain, although it is possible that at least some represent infilled ditches associated with earlier activity on the site. Subsequent limited trial trenching undertaken in 2021 had entirely negative results, although it should be noted that neither of the trenches excavated coincided with the linear anomalies identified by the preceding survey.

Map

October-November 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on two possible routes of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Areas 4 and 41).
This survey of three adjoining strips identified a number of linearly anomalies, the majority in the southern and easternmost parts of the site. These include two roughly east-to-west aligned anomalies that appear to coincide with former field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1). The remainder are all weak anomalies of underdetermined origin, at least some of which may also represent infilled ditches. The more notable examples include a pair of adjacent, parallel, east-to-west aligned, slightly sinuous responses in the north-east corner of the site that continue into the area examined to the east (NHER 50485)
A number of discrete dipolar anomalies and areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the surveyed areas probably represent ferrous material on or near the ground surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 1 November 2022.

April-May 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Trenches 3 and 4).
The two trenches excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
It should though be noted that neither trench coincided with any of the linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey. The nature of these responses therefore remains uncertain.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 1 November 2022.
