Summary

An undated mound of possible archaeological origin has been identified on the ground. There is no evidence for the function of this mound but Church Lane, which runs east to west directly south of the feature, diverts southwards to avoid the mound before continuing onwards. This suggests that the feature is likely of archaeological origin. Cropmarks of possible Bronze Age barrows have been identified 600m to the north, so the mound could represent a possible Bronze Age barrow. Alternatively, the mound could be a post-medieval garden feature, such as a tree mound, as the land lies within the grounds of The Manse (NHER 13125), a 17th or 18th century house.

Map

Before 21 October 2022. Casual Observation.
A mound of possible archaeological origin, measuring approximately 10m diameter, was observed but no evidence for the function or date of the mound was noted. However, cartographic evidence suggests that the mound likely existed by the early 19th century. The Tithe map of c. 1836-1885 (S1) shows Church Lane, which runs east to west directly south of the feature, diverting southwards at the site of the mound before continuing east. This can also be seen on the First Edition 25-inch Ordnance Survey map (S2) of 1885 but neither map shows the mound itself. The Second Edition 25-inch Ordnance Survey map (S3) of 1904 is the first map to clearly show the mound adjacent to the kink in Church Lane. No clear evidence is available to suggest a pre 19th century date, but such a mound could represent a Bronze Age barrow. Cropmarks of possible Bronze Age barrows have been identified 600m to the north of this site so there is similar prehistoric activity in the vicinity. Alternatively, the mound might be a post-medieval garden feature, such as a tree mound. The site lies within the grounds of The Manse (NHER 13125), a large 17th or 18th century house, and although available maps do not show any planned gardens surrounding The Manse, the possibility should be considered.
