Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021 revealed no anomalies of definite archaeological significance. Although it is tentatively suggested that a series of linear anomalies may represent traces of medieval or early post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, this interpretation is seen as doubtful. The southern half of the site was obscured by a large area of magnetic disturbance which may represent debris from a World War Two accommodation area which lay immediately to the west (NHER 66479).

October 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Bexwell to Bury St Edmunds pipeline (Area 6).
This survey revealed no anomalies of definite archaeological significance. Although it is suggested that a series of east-to-west and north-east to south-west aligned linear anomalies in the northern half of the site could possibly represent traces of medieval or early post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, it is noted that this is doubtful due to their irregular spacing. As with similar responses noted in the field to the south (NHER 66448) they may well be the result of much more recent agricultural activity.
Much of the southern half of the site is obscured by a large expanse of dipolar anomalies, the cause of which is regarded as unknown. The site does though lie immediately to the east of one of several satellite sites associated with Downham Market airfield (NHER 2455). Various probable accommodation blocks and other structures were present at the location, all of which were demolished at some point during the latter half of the 20th century (see NHER 66479 for further details).
See report (S1) for further details.
