Summary

The traces of an area of medieval or early post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation are visible to the south-east of Wood Hall as parchworks on aerial photographs. The possible remnants of a series of ploughed-out medieval to post-medieval boundary banks are also visible as slight earthworks on visualised lidar data of the land to the east and south-east of Wood Hall. Two of these may represent part of a former boundary associated with Wood Hall Park (NHER 56269).

May 2021. Aerial Investigation and Mapping.
Examination of available aerial imagery and lidar data for proposed route of Anglian Water Bexwell to Bury St Edmunds pipeline.
The possible remnants of a series of ploughed-out medieval to post-medieval boundary banks are visible as slight earthworks on visualised lidar data of this location (S3). These include four north-to-south aligned features to the east of Wood Hall. The easternmost of these lies between TL 6346 9766 and TL 634 29740 and can be seen to coincide with a former field boundary depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S4). It's line appears to be continued to the south by a long thin former plantation shown on the same map (which lay adjacent to the extant pond) and another possible boundary bank visible between TL 6331 9723 and TL 6317 9712. If these various features were indeed contemporary, the curving line of this boundary suggests it was possibly related to the park surrounding Wood Hall (NHER 56269).
Another, north-west to south-east aligned possible boundary bank is visible between TL 6303 9727 and TL 6315 9712.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 April 2023.

September 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Bexwell to Bury St Edmunds pipeline.
A trench excavated across the line of the north-west to south-east aligned possible boundary bank running between TL 6303 9727 and TL 6315 9712 recorded no associated features or deposits.
See NHER 66471 for further details.
