Full Description
June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Bexwell to Bury St Edmunds pipeline (Trenches 6-14).
The nine trenches excavated at this location revealed three linear features. These included a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned ditch and a north-west to south-east aligned gully or truncated ditch that both produced several sherds of Late Iron Age pottery. This small assemblage of sherds in hard-fired sandy fabrics includes part of a vessel with burnished surfaces and curvilinear decoration. Another sherd is from a globular vessel of probable early to mid-1st-century AD date (i.e. Late pre-Roman Iron Age to early Roman).
The third feature was a west-north-west to east-south-east aligned ditch in the southern half of the site that produced a fragment of post-medieval land drain. This was presumably associated with a former field boundary of relatively recent date.
See report (S1) for further details.
