Summary

A geophysical survey undertaken in 2020/2021 identified a number of linear anomalies that correspond with former field boundaries depicted on a late 19th-century map. The only other responses of note were a group of somewhat amorphous discrete anomalies recorded at the northern end of the site. These were regarded as potentially archaeologically significant but subsequent trial trenching suggested that none were associated with sub-surface remains.

Map

October 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Bexwell to Bury St Edmunds pipeline (Area 24).
This survey identified a series of regularly-spaced north-west to south-east aligned linear anomalies, all of which correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1).
The only other responses of potential archaeological interest were a group of somewhat amorphous discrete anomalies at the northern end of the site. It is though noted that some or all of these were potentially the result of natural variations in the underlying geology.
Scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 April 2023.

July 2021. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potentially impact of proposed Anglian Water Bexwell to Bury St Edmunds pipeline.
For further details see report (S3), which was submitted as part of the Environmental Statement for the scheme.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 April 2023.

September 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Bexwell to Bury St Edmunds pipeline (Trench 89).
A single trench was excavated at this location, which was positioned to target the group of potentially-archaeologically significant discrete geophysical anomalies identified at the northern end of the field. No features were revealed and no finds recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 April 2023.
