Summary

A group of military buildings associated with Downham Market airfield (NHER2455) are visible at this location on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The majority were probably accommodation blocks, three of which still survive to the west of the A10, along with an associated water tower. Other surviving elements of the World War Two site include access tracks and the concrete foundations of several demolished structures. See NHERs 63351, 65670 and 66475-66483 for details of the other satellite sites associated with the World War Two airfield.

Map

A group of military buildings associated with Downham Market airfield (NHER 2455) are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946. These include a series of probable accommodation blocks and a number of other structures. The majority of the buildings visible on the aerial photographs are depicted on an Ordnance Survey Six-inch map published in 1952 (S1), but most were subsequently demolished. The site is also now bisected by the A10.
One group of three adjacent probable accommodation blocks does though survive in apparently relatively unaltered form at TF 6245 0283, along with an associated water tower. These are in use as commercial premises. A number of tracks and access roads on either side of the A10 were also once part of the World War Two site. It is also clear from recent aerial imagery such as (S2) that the concrete bases of several structures also still survive at the southern end of the site, at TF 6255 0270. It is possible that further remains lie within the areas of scrubby, overgrown land on the western side of the A10.
See NHERs 63351, 65670 and 66475-66483 for details of the other satellite sites associated with the World War Two airfield.
