Full Description
A group of military buildings associated with Downham Market airfield (NHER 2455) are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946. These include two larger buildings at the western and southernmost margins of the site and a number of other, smaller structures around the remainder of its perimeter. The functions of the buildings at this location are unclear at present. Most are depicted on an Ordnance Survey Six-inch map published in 1952 (S1), but all were subsequently demolished. A rectangular area of concrete hardstanding in the north-west corner of the site (currently used for farm storage) does though probably represent the surviving footings of one of the two larger buildings. The remainder of the site is now ploughed arable land and recent aerial imagery provides no evidence for any additional surviving remains. It should though be noted that the trackway to the north was also created during World War Two, providing access to several additional groups of buildings to the west.
See NHERs 63351, 65670, 66474-66476 and 66478-66483 for details of the other satellite sites associated with the World War Two airfield.
