World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: East of the Village Hall, Ipswich Road, Long Stratton.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding cross. It is used to commemorate twenty-six local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly five parishioners who died in World War Two. It is described with “a two-stepped stone base, surmounted by a polished granite pedestal, rising to the tapered rectangular shaft and cross.” The whole is described as standing “on a brick platform with brick copings and flagstones” (S1). There are inscriptions and wreaths to the pedestal, in carved relief. The former World War One dedication is in recessed panels to each face. The south and north face, each with a wreath and the year 1914 and 1919 respectively, and to the east face with the twenty-six associated names listed in two columns. The west face has a blind panel. This dedication continues around the top of the pedestal with an inscription (Inscription A). Beneath the east face is a rectangular stone tablet with the latter World War Two dates and five associated names listed in two columns (Inscription B) (S4).
