Map

October-November 2022. Trial Trenching.
Archaeological evaluation undertaken ahead of proposed reordering of the Abbey Estate (Trench 12).
The single trench excavated at this location revealed a north-to-south aligned ditch. This feature produced no finds and is of uncertain date, particularly as its alignment is distinct from those of the former field boundaries depicted nearby on the Thetford St Peter Tithe map of 1843 (S1).
It appears this location probably saw only minimal disturbance during the construction of the Abbey Estate in the 1960s, with an apparently undisturbed subsoil layer present beneath the topsoil.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.302).
P. Watkins (HES), 23 November 2022. Amended 7 January 2025.
