Summary

A geophysical survey of this site identified several short linear anomalies of uncertain origin, one of which corresponds with a previously recorded cropmark (part of a group of potentially Iron Age to Roman remains recorded as NHER 50610). Subsequent limited trial trenching revealed a ditch associated with this anomaly but unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. This work also uncovered a large hollow or uncertain date and origin, the fill of which contained burnt flints and abundant charcoal fragments. Datable finds were limited to a single worked flint of probable Neolithic date.

Map

November 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Area 14).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest. Several short linear anomalies may be associated with sub-surface remains, although all are regarded as being of undetermined origin. These do though include a north-west to south-east aligned response that appears to coincide with a previously recorded linear cropmark (part of a group of potentially Iron Age to Roman remains recorded as NHER 50610).
See report (S1) for further details.

May-July 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Field TT14; Trenches 125 and 126).
The westernmost of the two trenches excavated at this location revealed a north-west to south-east aligned ditch that probably relates to one of the potentially Iron Age to Roman cropmarks recorded in this area (NHER 50610). Unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. A large hollow with a silty fill was also encountered, which appears to correspond with an area of magnetic disturbance identified by the preceding geophysical survey. A single worked flint of probable Neolithic date was recovered from its fill and a sample from this deposit was found to contain pieces of burnt flint and abundant charcoal fragments.
See report (S2) for further details.
