Full Description
November 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Area 17).
This survey identified a north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly at the western end of the site and a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomaly at the eastern edge of the field that both correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Weston Longville tithe map (S1). A number of other, fragmentary, weak linear anomalies were also recorded, although these are of a much less certain nature. All are regarded as being of undetermined origin.
Scattered dipolar discrete anomalies were probable caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 February 2025.
May-July 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Field TT10; Trenches 152-153, 155 and 158-160).
The six trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of undated ditches, the majority of which were aligned roughly north-to-south or east-to-west. A sample from one of these features was found to contain abundant charcoal and occasional fragments of burnt flint. There was little correspondence between these results and those of the preceding geophysical survey. The one exception was a north-east to south-west aligned ditch in the western half of the site that coincided with one of the fragmentary linear anomalies.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 February 2025.
