Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 recorded various fragmentary linear anomalies, all of which were regarded as being of uncertain origin. Subsequent trial trenching in 2022 did though demonstrated that the northernmost group coincided with several ditches, one of produced a small amount of medieval pottery. Although a number of other ditches and two pits were recorded elsewhere these features were all undated – a small number of prehistoric worked flints and several burnt flints in one of the pits being the only other finds recovered.

Map

November 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Area 21).
This survey revealed nothing of definite archaeological interest. Although a number of reasonably strong fragmentary linear anomalies were identified these are all regarded as being of undetermined origin. The majority of the other responses recorded are either natural in origin or the result of recent agricultural activity.
Areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the site and scattered dipolar ‘spikes’ were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
See report (S1) for further details.

May-July 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Field TT06; Trenches 208-212).
The five trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of ditches and two pits, all of which produced little or no dating evidence. One of the pits could be tentatively suggested as potentially prehistoric as it was found to contain four worked flints and a small amount of burnt flint. A sample from the fill of this feature produced only a moderate amount of charcoal and a medium legume. No finds were recovered from the second pit.
The ditches recorded included a three north-east to south-west aligned features recorded in the northernmost part of the site, which coincided with the main concentration of fragmentary linear anomalies recorded by the preceding geophysical survey. Two medieval pottery sherds recovered from one of these ditches. The remaining ditches were all undated, although the diverse nature of their alignments suggests that multiple phases of activity were probably represented.
See report (S2) for further details.
