Summary

Trial trenching at this location in 2014 identified a number of ditches, the majority of which lay in the southern half of the site. The finds recovered suggest at least some of these features were probable associated with medieval plot or field boundaries, including several particularly substantial examples. The other ditches were of uncertain date, the one exception being a feature that coincided with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-centruy maps.

December 2014. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The twenty-four trenches excavated revealed a number of ditches, the majority of which lay in the southern half of the site. These included several particularly substantial north-west to south-east aligned features, one of which produced 28 sherds of medieval pottery. Smaller quantities of medieval pottery were recovered from two of the other ditches in this part of the site and several also produced fragments of animal bone. There was no artefactual evidence for later activity on the site, although one of several north-east to south-west aligned ditches clearly corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2).
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 December 2022. Amended 18 January 2024.
