Map

February-March 2013. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of new water main.
Two east-to-west aligned ditches were recorded within the narrow pipe trench excavated. The southernmost, at c. TF 7783 1511 contained single sherds of medieval and medieval/post-medieval pottery and several fragments of animal bone.
The second ditch, at c. TF 7782 1516 produced no dating evidence.
Unstratified finds explicitly recorded as being from this field include medieval pottery sherds, fragments of post-medieval glass and clay tobacco pipe and a single piece of animal bone.
A number of objects listed as being "…from a small area to the west of River Road", were also probably from this field, although it is possible they were from the pipe trench dug in the field to the north (NHER 66636). These poorly-located objects included Late Saxon and medieval pottery sherds, a medieval strap-end spacer, a medieval roof tile fragment, several undatable iron objects and fragments of animal bone.
