Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this location in 2011 recorded a post-medieval brick structure of uncertain nature. This had made use of at least one piece of medieval masonry, which had possibly come from nearby Caister Castle (NHER 8671). A deep, potentially partly colluvial subsoil was present that produced Roman pottery, medieval ceramic building material and a glass vessel of late post-medieval/modern date.

Map

March-August 2011. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new bungalow.
Topsoil had been stripped prior to the commencement of the watching brief, exposing a notably deep subsoil layer shown to survive to a depth of 1.5m below present ground level. This deposit was probably at least partly colluvial in origin and produced a number of finds, including two Roman pottery sherds, two medieval bricks, a medieval floor tile and a post-medieval/modern glass bottle. The only feature recorded was a masonry structure exposed within one of the foundation trenches for the new building. This appeared to comprise two adjoining, perpendicular red brick walls, one aligned north-west to south-east and the other north-east to south-west. The former appeared to terminate within the trench, with no trace of a north-west wall identified. A medieval stone ashlar fragment of possible 14th-century date and a post-medieval brick were recovered from a rubble layer associated with this structure. The nature of this structure is unclear – it was possible a soakaway associated with Stone Cottage.

The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.201).
