Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this site in 2022 recorded little in the way of significant remains. A sequence of made-ground deposits was exposed, all of which were likely to be of post-medieval or later date. The lower deposits were truncated by several late post-medieval to modern features, including pits, drains and footing trenches.

Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of small extension to 18 St George’s Street (NHER 50287).
The foundation trenches excavated revealed a sequence of made-ground deposits beneath the modern surface, one of which produced a small post-medieval pottery sherd, clay tobacco pipe fragments, a piece of vessel or bottle glass, two iron objects and a number of animal bones. The lower deposits were truncated by a number of recent features including late post-medieval/modern drains, a modern pit and two modern footing trenches.
