Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021 identified no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies. This negative result was unexpected as a complex group of cropmarks thought to represent an area of former settlement had previously been recorded at this location (NHER 50730). It is felt that this was most likely due to ground conditions being unfavourable for magnetic survey, rather than a genuine absence of significant remains.

October 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Area 5).
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.
The negative result of this survey is somewhat surprising, given that cropmarks thought to represent a settlement of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs of this field (recorded as NHER 50730). It is suggested that this may be due to there being an insufficient magnetic contrast between the fills of any features present and the surrounding geological deposits. This location also appear to have had slightly increased natural background enhancement, which may have contributed to the masking of weak archaeological anomalies.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 March 2023.

March 2022. Desk-based Assessment.
Updated archaeological assessment of large proposed development.
See report (S2) for further details.
