Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021 identified a range of anomalies, although most are likely to be of only limited archaeological significance. The more notable responses include an 'L'-shaped linear anomaly that potentially represents part of an enclosure ditch. The other linear anomalies recorded include several that correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps. There was little evidence for surviving remains associated with various linear cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of this field (the majority elements of two extensive groups recorded as NHERs 50725 and 50726). There was though clear evidence for remains associated with the World War Two airfield (NHER 8170), with numerous short perpendicular linear anomalies identified adjacent to the recorded positions of two of the main runways.

October 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Area 8).
The more notable responses include an 'L'-shaped linear anomaly in the south-west corner of the field that potentially represents an archaeologically-significant feature.
A number of other linear anomalies clearly correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Rackheath tithe map (S2). These include a roughly east-to-west aligned feature in the westernmost part of the field that also coincides with a cropmark visible on aerial photographs (one of several features of probable medieval to post-medieval date recorded as NHER 17676). There was though little evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with various other linear cropmarks mapped at this location (elements of two extensive groups recorded as NHERs 50725 and 50726). The one exception is a north-east to south-west aligned cropmark at TG 2842 1451 (recorded under NHER 50725), although the strong associated anomaly is thought to represent remains associated with the World War Two airfield (NHER 8170). Various other responses also relate to the airfield, including several lines of short, parallel linear anomalies that correspond with two of the main runways. These anomalies are adjacent and perpendicular to the recorded positions of the runways, suggesting they potentially represent associated drainage features.
A number of scattered, more irregular linear anomalies are regarded as being of uncertain origin and may therefore represent archaeological remains. The remainder are of likely natural or agricultural orgin.
See report (S3) for further details.
