Summary

A geophysical survey in 2021 identified a possible rectilinear enclosure at the northern end of this field. The only other responses of note were two linear anomalies at the southern end of the site, one of which corresponds with a former field boundary shown on a 19th-century map.

Map

November 2016. Desk-based Assessment.

October 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Area 14).
This survey identified a weak rectilinear anomaly at the northern end of the site that potentially represents a small enclosure. The only other responses of notes are two linear anomalies at the southern end of the site. The more extensive of these is aligned east-to-west and corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Salhouse tithe map (S2). A perpendicular linear anomaly to the south is regarded as being of undetermined origin but may represent another field boundary ditch.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a range of cropmark features visible at this location on aerial photographs. These include scattered fragmentary cropmarks in the central and northern parts of the site thought to represent elements of a possible Iron Age to Roman field system (an extensive group recorded as NHER 50726) and elements of a group of probable post-medieval field boundaries at the northern end of the field (NHER 50819).
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 February 2026.

March 2022. Desk-based Assessment.
Updated archaeological assessment of large proposed development.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 February 2026.
