Summary

A geophysical survey in 2021 identified a number of probable ditches, one of which coincides with a cropmark that is part of an extensive group of fragmentary features thought to represent elements of an Iron Age to Roman field system (NHER 50726). The other ditches include several features that correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps. A number of discrete anomalies may also represent archaeologically-significant remains, although a natural origin is also possible.

October 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Area 15).
This survey identified a number of responses likely to represent infilled ditches, the most notable of which is a north-west to south-east aligned linear anomaly in the south-east corner of the field. This coincides with a cropmark visible on aerial photographs that is part of a group of dispersed, fragmentary features thought to potentially represent elements of an Iron Age to Roman field system (NHER 50726). It is possible that similarly-aligned anomalies in the north-east corner of the field represent remains of a similar age.
Several of the remaining linear anomalies clearly correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Salhouse tithe map (S2). Other responses of note include to east-to-west aligned linear anomalies at the eastern end of the site. The westernmost of these was potentially associated with a group of linear cropmarks recorded immediately to the south (NHER 50724), although there was no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with the cropmarks themselves. It is though noted that these were potentially of geological rather than archaeological origin.
A number of weak discrete anomalies at the western end of the field are regarded as being of uncertain origin and may therefore represent archaeologically-significant remains, although a natural origin is also possible.
See report (S3) for further details.

March 2022. Desk-based Assessment.
