Summary

A watching brief maintained during the construction of an extension at this location in 2021 recorded no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. It should though be noted that the monitored groundworks were shallow and only removed a portion of a subsoil deposit that lay beneath the modern overburden.

Map

August 2021. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of extension to existing building.
The reduction of the footprint of the new building by approximately 0.5m removed modern overburden and only a portion of an underlying subsoil layer. As a result no archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recovered.
The site had clearly seen some modern disturbance, with a large metal fuel tank present within the area of the excavations as well as a modern ceramic drain and a brick manhole.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2021.137).
