Full Description
May 2016. Desk-based Assessment.
Heritage assessment of proposed pipeline running between the Crossways Waste Management Facility and a new outfall on the southern bank of The Beck at c.TM 4127 9784.
This study concluded that there was the potential for archaeologically-significant remains to be present along the proposed route of the pipeline.
See report (S1) for further detail.

March 2017. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of trench for new water pipeline between existing pipe at TM 4135 9733 and a new outfall into a stream approximately 470m to the north, at TM 4142 9779.
At the northern end of the site, close to the stream the topsoil lay above alluvial deposits. Across the remainder of the site a subsoil layer was present beneath the topsoil.
Features identified included several ditches and a possible pit. The probable ditches included a pair of intercutting north-west to south-east aligned features towards the northern end of the site, at c.TM 4139 9771. The earlier of the two produced a prehistoric flint flake and the later a single abraded medieval pottery sherd. It is potentially notable that the alignment of these ditches was similar to that of a number of linear cropmarks previously mapped in the vicinity of the pipeline to the south (part of a group of undated but potentially medieval features recorded as NHER 49623). Although the pipeline crossed the line of one of these cropmarks and lay close to two others no associated sub-surface remains were identified.
Two other ditches to the south produced no finds but were probably of much more recent date. These included a feature at c.TM 4138 9763 that appears to have coincided with an east-to-west aligned former field boundary depicted on the Thurlton tithe map of 1840 (S2). A substantial east-to-west aligned ditch close to the southern end of the site was probably associated with a nearby extant field boundary (which has been present since at least the mid 19th century).
The possible pit was identified towards the southern end of the site and produced no dating evidence. A prehistoric flint flake found in the subsoil overlying this feature was the only unstratified find recovered despite an inspection of all the spoil heaps.
See report (S3) for further details.
