Summary

A watching brief maintained during the excavation of a new dyke at this location in 2014 recorded no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. A number of burnt bricks found in the topsoil were probably derived from the nearby drainage mill (NHER 8460), which is known to have been damaged by fire in the early 20th century.

Map

April-May 2014. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of new dyke adjacent to west bank of River Thurne, south of St Benet’s Level Drainage Mill (NHER 8460).
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were observed, with the new dyke being cut into natural grey clayey silts. A small number of burnt brick fragments were though noted in the topsoil at the northern end of the dyke, close to the mill. These were presumably discarded during repairs to the mill in the early 20th century, when it is known to have been damaged by fire.
See report (S1) for further details.
