Full Description
July-November 2009. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of new lake as part of Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (Compartment 8).
This lake was dug to a depth of up to 2m, revealing a sequence of natural silty clay deposits beneath a thin topsoil. These deposits were fairly consistent across the area of the lake, with no obvious sign of the area of possible peat or clay extraction visible as vegetation marks on aerial photographs of this location (NHER 45081). It was though noted that the excavated material was slightly softer in this area.
The only feature noted was a narrow, slightly sinuous channel likely to have been a natural stream.
Finds were limited to a small assemblage of late post-medieval to modern pottery and a single fragment of clay tobacco pipe stem of probable 19th-century date. A number of brick fragments were also noted but not collected.
See report (S1) for further details.
