Civil Parish THURNE, GREAT YARMOUTH, NORFOLK

Map

July-November 2009. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of new drainage dyke as part of Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (Compartment 8).
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recorded.
A sequence of natural silty clay deposits was revealed beneath the thin topsoil, the uppermost of which were full of reeds of relatively recent date. The silty clay deposits were fairly consistent along the length of the dyke with no evidence for two possible areas of peat or clay extraction visible as vegetation marks and slight earthworks on aerial photographs (one at the northern end of the dyke recorded as NHER 45082 and one at the southern end recorded as NHER 45081).
No finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
