Summary

No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were identified during the installation of a new water main at this location in 2022. A watching brief maintained during the stripping of topsoil from the working easement recorded only two ditches of obviously recent date. It was though clear that extensive areas of topsoil and subsoil were still present along this section of the easement, potentially obscuring any remains present. A final phase of archaeological mitigation saw the excavation of six trial trenches in the areas with surviving soil deposits. No additional features were revealed.

Map

August-September 2022. Watching Brief and Trial Trenching.
Archaeological work undertaken during installation of new water main.
This section of the pipeline route was subject to a watching brief due to the nature of the archaeological evidence previously recorded in the vicinity, including a number of undated linear features visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (NHER 53367). The removal of approximately 0.2m of topsoil from the working easement revealed only two ditches of obviously recent date (both being associated with extant boundaries). It was though clear that this initial strip had left extensive areas of topsoil and subsoil, which potentially obscured any additional features present. A subsequent phase of archaeological mitigation saw the excavation of six trial trenches in the areas where soils deposits survived. These revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits, although it should be noted that none were positioned to coincide with the cropmarks mapped at this location.
No finds were recovered during either phase of work.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.144).
