Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2023 revealed a number of ditches, two of which produced single sherds of Late Bronze Age pottery. One also contained a Bronze Age fired clay spindle whorl and so is regarded as a potentially prehistoric feature. The other ditch produced a small post-medieval pottery sherd and fragments of animal bone and was therefore probably of much more recent date. Undated features included a third, differently-aligned ditch, two probable plough furrows and a single post-hole.

Map

February 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The six trenches excavated revealed a number of linear features and a possible post-hole. Although few finds were recovered there was evidence for prehistoric activity, with single sherds of Late Bronze Age pottery found in an east-to-west aligned ditch at the northern edge of the site and a recut east-north-east to west-south-west aligned ditch to the south. The former also produced a slightly abraded fired clay spindle whorl of Bronze Age date, suggesting this may well have been a prehistoric feature. A sample from the fill of this ditch produced only a grass seed fragment. The ditch to the south was probably of more recent date as it was also produced a single sherd of post-medieval pottery and several fragments of animal bone. A sample from this ditch contained frequent elder seeds, occasional wheat grains as well as fragments of vitrified clinker and vitrified charcoal.
Undated features included a north-east to south-west aligned ditch revealed close to the southern edge of the site and the single post-hole, which lay in the central part of the site.
Two narrow roughly north-to-south aligned linear features in the westernmost trench were interpreted as probable plough furrows.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
