Summary

A series of east-to-west aligned linear earthworks likely to represent the remnants of medieval or early post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation are visible on aerial images and visualised lidar data of this site (recorded as NHER 62316). A geophysical survey undertaken in 2016 recorded traces of these features and a subsequent earthwork survey undertaken in 2017 confirmed their survival. The geophysical survey and earthwork survey also identified traces of several former field boundary ditches and drainage features, at least two of which correspond with features shown on 19th-century maps. Subsequent trial trenching in 2018 recorded a small number of additional features that were not directly associated with the ridge and furrow earthworks. These included a number of north-to-south aligned ditches, several post-holes and a possible pit. The majority produced no dating evidence.

Map

September 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development site.
This survey identified a series of regularly-spaced, parallel east-to-west aligned linear anomalies at the western edge of the site. These clearly represent traces of the ridge and furrow earthworks visible on aerial images of this site (recorded as NHER 62316).
A number of north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomalies were also identified in the southernmost part of the site. The westernmost of these corresponds with a sinuous drain shown on the South Wootton tithe map (S1) and another, straighter response to the east clearly coincides with one of the presumably later, post-medieval field boundaries shown on this map. Similarly-aligned features in the south-easternmost part of the site potentially represent earlier element of the same field system.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 April 2023.

April 2017. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of large proposed development site.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 April 2023.

May 2017. Earthwork Survey.
Survey of main group of earthwork features visible on aerial images and visualised lidar data (NHER 62316).
As expected the earthworks surveyed consisted largely of a series of east-to-west aligned linear features likely to represent the traces of medieval or early post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. A series of field boundary banks and ditches were also recorded.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 April 2023.

February-May 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development site (Field 8; Trenches 83-92).
The ten trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of features that weren’t directly associated with the ridge and furrow earthworks (which were not subject to any further recording during this phase of work). These included several north-to-south aligned ditches, a dispersed group of post-holes and a possible pit. Finds were limited to a single fragment of Roman tile and two Late Saxon pottery sherds, all of which came from one of the ditches.
Unstratified finds included a small number of Late Saxon and post-medieval pottery sherds, a post-medieval coin, a post-medieval lead musket ball and an undatable fragment of lead waste.
See report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 April 2023.

August 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of 0.9ha proposed development area at southern end of site.
The seven trenches excavated revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits and no finds were recovered.
Within the eastern portion of the area examined there was evidence for extensive disturbance associated with recent construction work.
See report (S6) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 October 2025.
