Map

A section of the below feature was previously recorded as part of NHER 21834.

July 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmark sections of a possible medieval open field boundary are seen on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The feature consists of sections of long linear ditch with one of the sections measuring approximately 1km in length. The alignment of the possible open field boundary does not respect the post medieval parish boundary between the parishes of Burgh and Tuttington or the alignment of the field boundaries recorded on the Tithe and Frist Edition Ordnance Survey maps (S3-S4). The approximately northeast – southwest alignment of the boundary also appears to be cut by post medieval and modern field boundaries at several points. The feature also appears to cut across an interfluve between the River Bure to the south-west and one the Bure’s tributaries to the north-east. The origin and date of the feature is uncertain, and it has been tentatively suggested to be medieval in date from its form and alignment. However, an earlier, possibly later prehistoric date or Saxon date, cannot be ruled out.
