Summary

The excavation of narrow footing trenches for several new buildings at this site in 2016 revealed a number of pits or ditches. Several of these features are thought to have predated the post-medieval period, although single sherds of medieval and medieval/post-medieval pottery were the only earlier finds recovered. Several brick and flint walls and a north-to-south foundation trench had probably been associated with a former building depicted on late 19th-century maps.

Map

April-May 2016. Excavation and Watching Brief.
Archaeological mitigatory work undertaken during construction of three new dwellings and a shop adjacent to 33 Baker Street.
The excavation of footing trenches for the new dwellings in the southern half of the site exposed a number of archaeologically-significant features, including several interpreted as ditches (although it should be noted that the majority were not seen in adjacent trenches). Although dating evidence was fairly limited it is thought that at least three of these possible ditches probably predated the post-medieval period, including one that contained single sherds of medieval and late medieval/early post-medieval pottery (the only earlier finds recovered) and a reasonably large assemblage of pig bones. This feature did though also produce several sherds of late post-medieval/modern pottery, although it is suggested that these were potentially intrusive. The remaining features were all of probable post-medieval to modern date, including pits and possible ditches. A north-to-south aligned foundation trench was probably associated with a building shown at this location on the Ordnance Survey 1:500 Town Plan map of 1885 (S1). North-to-south and east-to-west aligned brick and flint walls that had probably also related to this building were the only features of note recorded with the footprint of the new shop.
See report (S2) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.340).
