Summary

A modern pipeline trench is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Although the pipeline itself is much more extensive, this part is recorded as it is reminiscent of a trackway and has been mistaken for an archaeological feature. It overlies a group of rectilinear enclosures (NHER 52551) and the line of a Roman road (NHER 66779).

Map

June 2023. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A modern pipeline trench is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The route of the pipeline is followed by a series of vertical aerial photographs taken in 1976 by Meridian Airmaps Limited on behalf of British Gas, of which S3 is one frame. This suggests it was a gas pipeline, probably constructed in the 1970s. Although the pipeline itself is much more extensive, this part is recorded as it is reminiscent of a trackway and has previously been mistaken for an archaeological feature (see Historic England record S4). It cuts through a group of rectilinear enclosures (NHER 52551) and the line of a Roman road (NHER 66779).
