Summary

Field and enclosure boundaries of unknown, probable Roman and post medieval date are visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs. Some of the marks probably correspond with excavated features of Roman date recorded in the same field (NHER 67120). One of the field boundaries is depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map, and is therefore of post-medieval date. Others are of uncertain date, and could date to either period, or represent a different phase of activity.

Map

June 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Field and enclosure boundaries of unknown, probable Roman and post medieval date are visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2). Some of the marks probably correspond with excavated features of Roman date recorded in the same field (NHER 67120). One of the field boundaries is depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3), and is therefore of post-medieval date; a ditch conjoined to its southern side and orientated at 90 degrees to it is likely to be of contemporary date. Others are of uncertain date, and could date to either period, or represent a different phase of activity. It is possible that some of the features recorded from the later Google Earth imagery (S2) are of modern origin, relating to the excavations that took place in 2022, rather than archaeological features.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 23 June 2023.

April 2025. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
Although the area examined coincide with the two easternmost east-to-west aligned cropmarks there was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.
See report (S4) and NHER 69719 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 February 2026.

October 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Although several of the trenches excavated coincided with the two easternmost east-to-west aligned cropmarks no corresponding sub-surface remains were identified.
See NHER 69719 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 February 2026.
