Full Description
January 2022. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The single trench excavated revealed two linear features – an east-north-east to west-south-west aligned ditch and a narrower, north-north-west to south-south-east aligned feature with fairly steep sides that terminated within the trench. The ditch contained a single sherd of medieval pottery and a fragment of animal bone. Finds recovered from the other linear feature (which is also recorded as a ditch despite its notably different profile) included six medieval pottery sherds of probable 12th- to 13th-century date, a large fragment of lava quern stone and a small quantity of animal bone. A sample taken from the fill of this feature was found to contain numerous carbonised cereal grains (including free-threshing wheat and oat), a single cotyledon of pea/bean and a number of what were probable arable weed seeds. Other debris present suggests these remains are likely to represent a mix of hearth ash and culinary waste from domestic activity.
