Summary

A watching brief maintained during the construction of several new dwellings in 2013 recorded a large feature at the eastern end of this site. This was possibly an infilled quarry pit associated with the post-medieval brickworks that had lain immediately to the north (NHER 16666).

Map

October-November 2013. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of three new residential dwellings.
A series of stanchion pits were excavated within each plot, which were also stripped down to the level of the natural geological deposits. Within the westernmost and central plots (Plots 1 and 2) these works revealed no archaeologically-significant remains, with only two shallow features of probable modern date exposed. Unfortunately works in the easternmost plot (Plot 3) were not monitored until after the site had been stripped and the stanchion pits excavated – by which time the area was heavily disturbed. The stanchion pits did however reveal evidence for a large feature covering much of the plot. It is possible that this was an infilled quarry pit associated with the post-medieval brickworks that had lain immediately to the north (NHER 16666).
No finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.213).
