Evaluation of proposed development site.
The seven trenches excavated revealed a number of ditches or gullies and a group of probable extraction pits. The majority of these features produced little in the way of dating evidence, the most notable exception being a north-to-south aligned ditch at the western edge of the site that was found to contain a near complete early Roman jar. The pottery sherds are though abraded, suggesting that they were potentially redeposited – possibly from a cremation or inhumation burial disturbed when the ditch was dug. No other potentially Roman features were identified, with two unstratified pottery sherds the only other Roman finds recovered.
The one other feature to contain dating evidence was a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditch that produced several brick fragments of probable 16th-century date. It was noted that this was the only ditch that could be seen to cut through the subsoil layer, suggesting that the other, undated ditches were possibly associated with phases of activity. These undated ditches included two east-north-east to west-south-west aligned features, the northernmost of which extended eastwards from the pair of presumably broadly contemporary north-to-south aligned ditches.
A cluster of irregular pit-like features at the eastern edge of the site coincided with an area of deeper subsoil and topsoil and are thought to have represented an infilled gravel quarry, where deeper extraction pit had been dug following the excavation of a large, shallower hollow. Finds were limited to two presumably residual worked flints.
Other unstratified finds included a small assemblage of Neolithic or later worked flints, two medieval pottery sherds, single sherds of post-medieval and post-medieval/modern pottery, a medieval floor tile, post-medieval brick and tile fragments and several post-medieval and undatable metal objects.
