Map

November 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The four trenches excavated revealed only evidence for relatively recent activity.
The two trenches immediately to the west of the former First and Last public house revealed a Victorian brick wall and a pit containing Edwardian rubbish. The finds from the latter (which were not retained) included intact and broken glass and ceramic bottles, jars, plates and other crockery, as well as various iron tools, brick rubble and metal buckets. A terminus post quem for this dump was provided by a stoneware ginger beer bottle bearing a date mark of 1906. The presence of only small amounts of machine-made glassware suggests this material was deposited not long after this date.
The only other feature of note was a ditch or natural hollow in the easternmost trench that contained a single shed of post-medieval pottery and a small quantity of animal bone. A sample from the fill of this feature was found to contain charcoal but little else in the way of significant remains. An abundance of woody plant material suggests a period of waterlogging.
The site had been disturbed by a number of service trenches and various made ground deposits were encountered.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.2).
