Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020 identified no potentially archaeologically-significant responses. Although a number of linear and discrete anomalies were recorded these are all thought to be either of natural origin or the result of recent agricultural activity. Limited trial trenching in 2025 and 2026 revealed a small number of features, including a pit containing iron smithing slag, a large probable clay extraction pit and several ditches. A large lava millstone fragment of possible Roman date found in one of the ditches was the only datable find recovered.

Map

January 2020. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
This study concluded the site had some potential to contain remains of local or regional significant but that these were unlikely to preclude or constrain development.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 August 2023.

August 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant responses.
Although several linear anomalies were recorded these are all thought to be the result of recent agricultural activity. The various discrete anomalies identified are deemed to be of natural origin and a number of scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 August 2023.

June 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of small plot in northern part of site.
The four trenches excavated revealed a small number of linear and discrete features.
Of particularly interest was a small pit containing a sizable assemblage of iron smithing slag, including a number of plano-convex heath bottoms. Three probable ditches were recorded, including a north-to-south aligned feature that produced a large lava millstone fragment of possible Roman date. The other ditches were aligned slightly more north-north-east to south-south-west – neither of which produced any dating evidence.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 June 2026.

January 2026. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of relatively small proposed development area in southern part of site.
The four trenches excavated, revealed little of archaeological interest, features being limited to a north-east to south-west ditch and a large probable clay extraction pit. Both were undated, an Early Neolithic blade-like flint flake being the only find recovered.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 June 2026.
