NHER 67191 (Monument record) - Possible prehistoric 'burnt mound'

Monitoring of excavation of three ponds by the Norfolk River Trust as part of a programme of habitat improvement works along this section of the River Glaven.
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were noted, although it is recorded that all three ponds flooded as soon as excavation commenced, so it is unlikely that any in situ remains would have been observable.
A number of burnt flints were though noted in the spoil at this location (Pond 2). It is therefore possible that the works had disturbed the remains of a prehistoric burnt mound – an accumulation of flints that had been used to heat or boil water drawn from a nearby source (often referred to as 'pot boilers'). Such activity was clearly taking place along this section of the River Glaven as what was almost certainly a burnt mound was subsequent disturbed approximately 800m to the south (NHER 67190). Several other possible examples have also been identified along this stretch of the River Glaven.
No worked flints or other artefacts were recovered.
