Full Description
August 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A broad linear bank, visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S3), probably relates to a post medieval field boundary. A narrower bank and ditch, also visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1, S4) and aligned perpendicular to it, may be a drain dating to the same period. This date is suggested because both features fit the pattern of enclosure depicted on 19th century maps (such as the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch, S3), although they are not themselves depicted. The earthwork of the field boundary, which is visible on the visualised lidar data, probably still survives, as the survey was flown relatively recently (2017). The earthworks of the drain appear to have been levelled.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 10 August 2023.
