Summary

A polygonal defensive ditch surrounding Brampton Roman town is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The cropmarks were previously recorded as part of NHER 1124, and information covering other work at the site (excavations, geophysical surveys, etc) remains in that record. The enclosure broadly forms a hexagon, but its circuit is incomplete; its northeastern side may have been formed by the former course of the river. Traces of a narrower inner circuit, perhaps a palisade, are visible in places. A clear entrance on the eastern side corresponds with a road leading from the southwest (NHER 66783).
