Full Description
August 2023. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A low, broad, rather curvilinear bank, visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data (S1), is probably the remains of a medieval and/or post medieval field boundary. It is one of several features of this type visible in the area (see NHER 66799, for example). They appear to be unrelated to the cropmarks of Brampton Roman town (NHER 66780) which are also visible across the same area; for this reason, the feature has been mapped by extent, to avoid confusion with these (presumably earlier) cropmarks. Even the relationship of the earthwork with a post medieval field system also visible as cropmarks (NHER 52552) in these fields is difficult to characterise, as large numbers of features, dating to the same period but sharing similar orientations, are visible in the same area. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017), it is probable that the earthwork still survives.
