Summary

The Memorial Chapel was built around 1804 by Philip Martineau as a garden building. He incorporated late 13th century ironwork and a number of memorials and architectural features. Only a single arch now remains of this building.

Listing Description Excerpt:
"Garden building in grounds of County Hall (formerly of Bracondale Lodge demolished in 1960s). Circa 1800, re-using late 12th century and 14th century carved stone mouldings of ecclesiastical provenance. Designed either by William Wilkins (sen), architect of Bracondale Lodge, or by Humphry Repton who designed the landscape. Flint and brick with ashlar dressings and faced with ashlar to eastern side."

Southwest of County Hall, chapel in Bracondale Woods. Built by Philip Martineau in 1804 or later. He incorporated late 13th century ironwork and ?door frame from cathedral infirmary door demolished in 1804 (225N). Half of stone matrix for brass of Richard de South Walsham obit 1439 Abbot of St Benet's Abbey moved in 1940 to South Walsham church. Originally found St Andrews Street, Norwich (other half Pevsner says lost is now (1986) in Norwich Cathedral having been found at Kett's Castle Villa, Thorpe Hamlet). Doors removed 1877 by J & J Colman Ltd who gave them to NCM in 1940 [1]. 1986 Forms doors to attendants' room in St Peter Hungate.

One arch remains of this building. It should not be confused with Knucklebone Hall summerhouse which stood further southwest.
