NHER 64219 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Site of Second World War huts

An area of Second Word War huts can be seen as structures on the 1940s aerial photographs (S1). The majority of the huts would have most likely related to support and accommodation huts. The huts are linked by a series of paths and tracks with a road running south from the site. In amongst the huts there are a number of small structures. The function of these features is unclear but they would have most likely related to support structures. Across the site there are also 5 rectangular structures with two possible corridors extending out of from the centre of the features. The structures don’t seem to be roofed and the interior is possibly dived into four. The function of these features is unclear, and they could have related to former shelters, blast walls or structures housing generators. Finally, in the south of the site is a square area of hard standing which may be surrounded by a fence. This may have been the site of a former emplacement, structure or store. The north and south of the site seem to be separated by a recessed trackway or road. The features are mostly removed by the 1960s (S2) and the area is covered by woodland on recent (2020) aerial photographs (S4). Some of the hut platforms are seen as earthworks on the recent visualised (2017) lidar data (S3) and some of the former structures are mapped on the modern Ordnance Survey map. The huts are part the domestic elements relating Swannington Airfield (NHER 7465) located approximately 1.5 km to the south west. Further areas of Second World War huts can be seen in close proximity to the south (centred approximately at TG 1568 2187) and to the east (TG 1534 2180). These have not been mapped as the are located outside of the project area.
