Summary

Archaeological work at this location prior to and during the installation of the electrical connection for an offshore windfarm revealed no evidence for significant remains. Although an initial geophysical survey recorded a number of linear anomalies none were likely to represent archaeological features. This was confirmed by subsequent trial trenching, which exposed only a possible quarry pit or natural hollow. A watching brief maintained during the actual installation of the electrical cable also recorded nothing of archaeological interest. Finds were limited to a small number of prehistoric worked flints.

Map

December 2009. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of proposed route of onshore cable for Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 August July 2023.

July 2013–April 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Fields 31 and 32).
This survey identified nothing of likely archaeological significance. Although a series of parallel east-to-west positive linear anomalies are present in the eastern half of the site these are likely to be geological in origin. North-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomalies at the western end of the site may represent infilled ditches but are more likely to be the result of recent landscaping. Two large dipolar spikes in the same area are also likely to be the result of modern activity.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 August July 2023.

November 2013-October 2014. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Fields 31 and 32; Trenches 6 and 7).
Two trenches were excavated at the location; one positioned to target the linear geophysical anomalies recorded at the western end of the site and the other to coincide with the parallel linear anomalies identified to the east.
The latter exposed a possible quarry pit or natural hollow while the former revealed nothing of archaeological interest.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 August July 2023.

2014-2016. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (General Watching Brief; Fields 31 and 32).
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recorded.
A small group of prehistoric worked flints was collected from the subsoil layer to the east of the track (Field 31). None are closely datable.
See assessment report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 August July 2023.
