Summary

Archaeological work at this location prior to and during the installation of the electrical connection for an offshore windfarm revealed no evidence for significant remains. The only response of note identified by an initial geophysical survey was linear anomaly that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on a late 19th-century map. A single trial trench excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposit and a watching brief maintained during the actual installation of the electrical cable also recorded nothing of interest.

Map

December 2009. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of proposed route of onshore cable for Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 August July 2023.

July 2013–April 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 33).
This survey identified a north-east to south-west aligned dipolar linear anomaly that coincides with the line of a former field boundary depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2). This may represent the line of a service running adjacent to this boundary.
The only other response of note was an amorphous discrete anomaly at the western edge of the site that may represent an infilled pit or hollow. Scattered dipolar spikes probably represent ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 August July 2023.

November 2013-October 2014. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 33; Trench 8).
The single trench excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. No finds were recovered.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 August July 2023.

2014-2016. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (General Watching Brief; Field 33).
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recorded at this location and no finds recovered.
See assessment report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 August July 2023.
