Full Description
December 2009. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of proposed route of onshore cable for Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 August July 2023.
July 2013–April 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 34).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological significance. A small number of scattered linear anomalies are present, including one towards the eastern end of the site that clearly corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2). A number of amorphous discrete positive anomalies potentially represent infilled pits, ponds or hollows. Scattered dipolar spikes probably represent either highly-fired material or, more likely, ferrous debris on or close to the surface.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 August July 2023.
November 2013-October 2014. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 34; Trenches 58, 176 and 180).
One of the three trenches excavated at this location was positioned to target linear anomalies recorded towards the eastern end of the field, while another was placed to investigate two of the more distinct discrete anomalies in the central part of the site. None revealed archaeologically-significant remains and no finds were recovered.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 August July 2023.
2014-2016. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (General Watching Brief; Field 34).
An isolated shallow oval pit with a charcoal-rich primary fill was recorded at this location. No finds were recovered. Although interpreted as a fire pit its description is also reminiscent of features recorded elsewhere that are now though to represent the traces of small scale, itinerant charcoal production.
See assessment report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 August July 2023.
