Summary

Archaeological work undertaken along the route of a new electrical cable between 2013 and 2016 revealed nothing of interest at this location. The only response of note identified by an initial geophysical survey was a linear anomaly thought to potentially represent a ditch or trackway. Subsequent limited trial trenching revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits, with the linear anomaly identified by the geophysical survey shown to be geological in origin.

Map

December 2009. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of proposed route of onshore cable for Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 6 June 2026.

July 2013–April 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 84).
This survey identified little of potentially archaeological interest. The more notable responses included a north-to-south aligned linear anomaly at the northern end of the site that potentially represented a former ditch or trackway. Amorphous positive anomalies at the southern end of the site may relate to infilled pits, hollows or ponds.
A short positive anomaly and an area of magnetic noise in the central part of the site coincide with a former field boundary shown on the Kettlestone tithe Map (S2).
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 6 June 2026.

November 2013-October 2014. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 84; Trenches 189-191).
The three trenches excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. The linear anomaly identified at the northern end of the site by the preceding geophysical survey was shown to have been caused by a variation in the underlying geology, while a bipolar anomaly elsewhere proved to be associated with a large iron pin from a gate.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 6 June 2026.

2014-2016. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (General Watching Brief; Field 184).
It appears that nothing of interest was noted at this location during the final phase of archaeological mitigation.
See assessment report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 6 June 2026.
