Full Description
June 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Probable medieval to post medieval field boundaries are seen as earthworks (since levelled) on aerial photographs (S1). The features consist of earthwork banks and ditches which most likely relate to medieval to post medieval field boundaries. It is also possible that some of the features may have related to post medieval drainage ditches. An area of undulating earthworks can be seen in the south of the area (centred at approximately TF 8838 0903) on S1. It is possible that these earthworks may be archaeological in origin. However, it is also possible that the earthworks may relate to natural features. Therefore, the area of undulating earthworks has been mapped by extent. The features can be seen as earthworks on the 1940s aerial photographs (S1) and have been levelled by the 1970s (S2), with some of the levelled features visible as cropmarks on recent (2006) aerial photographs (S3). The features are not recorded on the readily available historic maps such as the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3).
